Zona Abierta: Reviving Local Democracy: New Conflicts in the Chicago City Council
Presented by the UIC Latino Cultural Center
Join us as UIC postdoctoral scholars share their experiences and respective research with the UIC community. Through an intersectional lens, these scholars reveal the complexity and specificity of their contemporary research and how the lives of those in the margins are impacted.
Dr. Kumar Ramanathan, from the Department of Political Science, will present ongoing research on the politics of the contemporary Chicago City Council. His research shows how conflicts over inequality have transformed the Council—after decades where alderpeople were content to let the mayor control policy making, they are now asserting their role as legislators. He will discuss the new dividing lines within the Council and what they mean for the future of Chicago politics.
