SPRING 2017 POLITICAL SCIENCE 

UNDERGRADUATE WRITING CONTESTS 

The UIC Department of Political Science is pleased to announce its annual contests and prizes. 

The Department will award the following Undergraduate prizes:

(1) The Milton Rakove Memorial Award:  Two (2) prizes—$1,000 each

One prize in the amount of $1,000 will be given to the undergraduate political science Major/Minor with the best paper on a topic in international relations, including but not limited to war, peace, foreign policy, globalization, international political economy, etc.

One prize in the amount of $1,000 will be given to the undergraduate political science major/minor with the best paper on a topic in urban politics, including but not limited to city government, urban political economy, tourism, the global city, private governments, urban-suburban issues, etc.

(2)  The John Echols Memorial Award: One (1) prize — $700

One prize will be given to one undergraduate political science major/minor with the best paper on a topic in public policy analysis or comparative politics prepared for a class this academic year.

(3)  The Twiley Barker Memorial Award: Two (2)  prizes  $1,000 each

One prizes will be given to two separate undergraduate political science students with the best papers on a topic of constitutional law and ethics.

(4)  Best Graduating Senior in Political Science

            The Ron Brown Memorial Award: One (1) prize—$1,000

One award is given for the Best Graduating Senior in Political Science.  Students are encouraged to self-nominate for this award.  Students with outstanding academic achievement in the major coursework, and overall GPAs, should request two letters of recommendation from UIC faculty*, and submit a current DARS report along with a one-page personal statement summarizing their achievements and plans for the future.  *Other letters may be considered, but two letters must be from UIC faculty.

 

The deadline for document submission for all awards is:

Friday, April 14, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

Deliver the hard copy papers and any supporting materials to the

Political Science Department front office Room 1102, 312-996-3105.

All papers should be approximately 15-20 pages in length, in APA format, typewritten in 12 point font, and double-spaced. Additional pages can be included that contain references, tables, and/or figures. Students may only submit one paper to be considered. No multiple submissions.

Committees made up of department faculty will make the decisions on the winning papers!
